Michelangelos Pieta Museum Sculpture

Michelangelo's Pieta Museum Sculpture

The Pieta, which depicts the Virgin Mary holding the body of her son Jesus Christ after his death, has been created in many different forms by various painters and sculptors. Of all the great paintings and sculptures on the Pieta, Michelangelo’s Pieta is the most famous. This work of art depicts the body of Jesus in the arms of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion. Michelangelo’s interpretation of the Pieta is unique to the precedents. It is an important work as it balances the Renaissance ideals of classical beauty with naturalism.
