Ganesh (Ganesha) is the son of Shiva and Parvati. The pot belly of Ganesh signifies the bounty of nature and swallows the sorrows of the Universe in order to protect the world. Although he is known by many other attributes, having the head of an elephant makes Ganesh easy to identify.
